A lovely simplistic 'quinarius'
Lot 1887
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Quinarius' (Gold, 16 mm, 2.81 g, 1 h), 'Derived Gordian Group C'. O - Λ Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed imperial bust to left, seen from behind. Rev. S - Λ Mars advancing right, holding spear in his right hand and shield in his left. With original suspension loop attached. Very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

Clearly this coin closely follows the reverses of lots 1876-1877 above, however, the style is somewhat cruder and the legends have been reduced to two letters per side. It is a good example for the intermixing of types in Groups B and C.
